Reading about jazz record labels

I read an interesting article by saxophonist Bob Reynolds today
He describes his search for a record label for his latest CD. Here’s a guy who has played with major cats both in the pop field and jazz, went to Berklee, knows a lot of people and recorded six Cds of his own and yet still was only offered what sounded like a pretty lame deal with a jazz label. The labels he contacted basically told him they wouldn’t be able to sell his CD and didn’t want to take a risk on him. The article Bob wrote really gave me pause since Scott and I are working on putting out Spin Cycle’s first CD and considering either going with a label (if we can) or self producing the project. We’ll see what happens. Stay tuned!
